Who is this study designed for?
It is designed for students ages 13–18—whether learning at home or in a classroom, co-op, hybrid school, or homeschool group—who understand basic camera operation and are ready to make photographs with greater purpose. It begins beyond the absolute beginner level and does not cover initial camera setup.
What equipment does each student need?
Each student needs regular access to a smartphone or digital camera, a computer, and a practical way to store and organize image files. An interchangeable-lens camera is helpful but not required. Photo-editing software is not required.
Does the study teach photo editing?
No. The work develops attention, judgment, composition, light, timing, and deliberate choices in the field. Students learn to complete the photograph as fully as possible before leaving the subject.
How long does it take?
The study is structured across 36 weeks and includes 140 planned hours of reading, field work, reflection, selection, organization, and portfolio development. A family, instructor, or program may adjust the weekly schedule while preserving the complete body of work.
Can this be used as a full-year elective?
Yes. The 140-hour structure exceeds the traditional 120-hour Carnegie Unit benchmark. The parent, instructor, school, or program remains responsible for assigning credit according to its own policies and applicable requirements.
Do parents or instructors need photography experience?
No. The included administration materials provide the syllabus, calendar, assessment rubrics, optional letter-grade method, Portfolio Quick Guide, and Final Course Record. They give a parent or instructor the structure needed to supervise and assess the work without requiring separate photography instruction.
How much supervision is required?
A parent, instructor, or program leader establishes the schedule, reviews logged hours, monitors progress, assesses completed work, and maintains each student’s final records. Most reading, photography, reflection, and portfolio work can be completed independently.
What will each student produce?
Each student who completes the full study will produce field assignments, written reflections, organized photographic work, and a finished PDF portfolio containing 12–18 carefully selected images.
Can the portfolio be used beyond the course record?
Yes. The finished portfolio may be used for applications, exhibitions, portfolio reviews, further study, or as evidence of the student’s developing photographic ability.

How are the materials delivered?
After payment is completed, the purchaser—whether a parent, instructor, or program leader—receives a customer account and immediate access to the complete downloadable package through My Account > Downloads at availablelightmedia.com. No physical materials are shipped.
Which license do I need if more than one student will participate?
The $95 Household License covers siblings living within one household. It provides evergreen access, so siblings may complete the study together or in different school years. Parents may duplicate the trackers, records, templates, and certificates so each participating student completes an individual record and portfolio.
When participating students come from more than one household, the Classroom & Co-op License is required. It covers one instructor leading one program, class, co-op, hybrid-school elective, or homeschool group for one school year. Classroom and co-op licenses are available in four sizes:
- Up to 5 students: $350
- Up to 10 students: $600
- Up to 15 students: $800
- Up to 20 students: $950
Each classroom student completes an individual hour tracker, assessment record, and portfolio. The instructor may provide the necessary materials to students within the licensed group. For more than 20 students, contact support@availablelightmedia.com for group pricing.
How long does each license remain valid?
The $95 Household License provides evergreen access for one household, with no recurring fee or scheduled expiration. The Classroom & Co-op License authorizes use by the selected group for one school year. Both are one-time purchases with no recurring subscription.
May the files be shared?
Only within the limits of the purchased license. Household materials may be used by siblings in that household. An instructor may provide the necessary materials to students in the licensed classroom or co-op group. The files may not be shared outside the licensed household or group, uploaded to a public or unrestricted group drive, posted online, resold, or redistributed.
Is live instruction included?
No live instruction is provided by The Available Light. The household edition is a self-directed digital study completed with parent oversight. The Classroom & Co-op License provides the same complete materials for instruction and supervision by the purchaser’s own teacher or program leader.
What is the refund policy?
Because the complete digital package becomes available immediately after purchase, all sales are final once access has been granted, except as required by applicable law.
If a file is corrupted, incomplete, or unavailable because of a delivery problem, contact support@availablelightmedia.com within 14 days. We will restore access or provide a replacement file at no charge.
Verified duplicate purchases reported within 14 days will be refunded to the original payment method.
